Why Do Cats Eat Grass?

Consuming grass is normal for most cats and dogs and is unrelated to diseases and gastrointestinal issues.

The only problem arises if toxic plants or plants sprayed with pesticides are ingested.

Veterinarians have long wondered whether cats eat grass due to dietary deficiencies, as plants provide a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Many also claim that grass can act as a natural laxative, aiding hairballs in passing through the digestive tract. Research has shown that cats, when consuming their entire prey, obtain all the necessary nutrients for digestion and gastrointestinal health.

This leads some veterinarians to believe that cats fed commercial dry and wet foods may not acquire what cats in the wild do by consuming their entire prey, leading them to instinctively consume grass to fill the gaps.

Additionally, chewing on grass may be a cat's response to stress they are experiencing.

If your cat doesn't typically eat grass but suddenly starts, it would be a good idea to visit your veterinarian.
